Lent 2019 Day 15 Job Chapter 17

Job continues his complaints against his "Miserable comforters." Now he says they are mocking him. These men came to Job to be encouragers and to be consolers. What went wrong? In verse 4 we hear what went wrong, "For You have hidden their heart from understanding; Therefore You will not exalt them." Understanding has been hidden from them. It is very difficult to sympathize with someone, if you can't empathize with them.

They don't understand what Job is going through, so they say things that only increase his pain. Job is going through a very dark time in his life, and his friends say that light is near. Veres 12, "They change the night into day; ‘The light is near,’ they say, in the face of darkness.

I wonder if we have done the same thing. Do we tell our friends who are going through a dark time that
"The light is near"? Maybe our friends are going through a dark time and we tell them, "Everything is going to be alright." Is everything really going to be alright?

Look at Job's words in verse 10, "“But please, come back again, all of you, For I shall not find one wise man among you." The first time through his friends were "miserable comforters." Let's see if they can do better the second time around.
