40 Days of Service Day 21

Morning Prayer: Lord, how can I serve others today?
Scripture: Matthew 18:21-35

Peter wanted to know how many times he had to forgive his brother. Is seven times enough? Seven seems to be a lot of times especially if somebody hurt us. Maybe we could forgive that person one time, but if they ever hurt us again, a second forgiveness is difficult. I think Peter was being generous with forgiving a person seven times. Jesus did not seem impressed with the number that Peter suggested. He felt that was way too low. Jesus said, "not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Jesus tells a parable, where he compares sin to debt. The debt that others owe us is small in comparison to the debt that we owe God. But God is gracious and have forgiven all our debt. God forgives the debt of all the servants, and He demands that we forgive the debt that anybody owes us. It is impossible to serve others if we have not forgiven them, because in our hearts we have placed them in prison. Jesus compares a person who will not forgive their brother as a wicked servant. God desires for us to serve others, but in order to serve them, we must first forgive them.
