40 Days of Service Day 27

Morning Prayer: Lord, how can I serve others today?

Scripture: Luke 9:10-17

The disciples had just returned from the work of ministry. Jesus and the disciples tried to withdraw from the crowds, but the people were persistent. A large crowd of about 5,000 men were there. But Jesus did not push them away. He preached to them and even healed those who were sick. After worship service the disciples had a very difficult decision to make. It is the kind of decision that I am plagued with every Sunday, what are we going to do about lunch? The disciples think that buffet style meal would work out great. In my slang language, buffet means get it yourself. The disciples were fine with letting everybody fend for themselves when it came to lunch. But Jesus was not satisfied with the buffet style of meal. Instead Jesus says, “You give them something to eat.” This is the only miracle found in all four Gospels. All the disciples had was five loaves of bread and two fish, but God would multiply it, so that after everybody ate, there would be twelve basketfuls left over.

To me this is a great example of service. The disciples divided the crowd of 5000 men into groups of 50. That is 100 tables of hungry customers, and only 12 disciples waiting on them. When everybody was finished, it was the disciples who picked up all the leftovers. God can still do miracles, but He needs servants who are willing to bus tables.
