40 Days of Service Day 35

Morning Prayer: Lord, how can I serve others today?

Scripture: 1 Peter 4:7-11

In 1998, “Big Mac” Mark McGwire and “Slammin” Sammy Sosa were chasing a record that most people thought could never be broken. 37 years earlier, Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single season homerun record when he hit #61 on the last day of the 1961 season. A lot of people wanted to put an asterisk by Maris’ record, because it took him 162 games to break a record that Babe Ruth set in only 154 games. The world watched as McGwire and Sosa rewrote the record books. Sosa finished with 66 homeruns and McGwire finished with 70. They were praised for bringing excitement to baseball and for breaking the unbreakable record. But “Big Mac” and “Slammin” would receive asterisks for their accomplishments, because they both used (PED) Performance enhancing drugs.

Peter says, “If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides…” We cannot affectively serve God in our own strength. Either we will become weary and not complete the task, or we will finish and become prideful in our accomplishment. When we serve others with the strength that God provides, we will be able to accomplish what everybody thought could never be done. Peter warns that all the praise goes to God through Jesus Christ.
