40 Days of Service Day 37

Morning Prayer: Lord, how can I serve others today

Scripture: John 12:23-28

Jesus told His disciples that a kernel of wheat must die. Jesus was talking about His own death. They were in Jerusalem, so that Jesus could be crucified on a cross. And now Jesus tells His disciples, "Whoever serves me must follow me." If Jesus is going to be crucified on a cross, then His servants must also take up their crosses.

The cross represents persecution, insults, rejection, and ultimately death. Persecution is hard to imagine living in America, but as a follower of Jesus are you willing to be persecuted for Him? No one likes to be called names and laughed at, but as a follower of Jesus are you willing to endure insults? We all like to be accepted by others, especially our family and friends. As a follower of Jesus are you willing to be rejected, even by the ones you love the most? Ultimately the cross leads to death. As a follower of Jesus are you willing to die for your Lord?

Those who love this world and all the joys that life in this wworld brings will answer no to those questions. They might be willing to follow Jesus to an upper room, or after dinner might follow Him out to a garden. Few will follow Jesus to the cross.
